Platform work: what it is and how it works from an occupational safety and health perspective

Digital labour platforms are transforming how work is organized, managed and experienced. The Swedish Agency for Work Environment Expertise has published two publications that highlight the work environment in platform work – ranging from concrete risks to broader structural challenges. The publications are intended to strengthen the knowledge base. This is the report that complements the systematic literature review on the work environment in digital platform work.

This report builds on the systematic literature review and deepens the understanding of platform work as a phenomenon by:

  • Analysing how digital labour platforms are emerging and transforming the labour market
  • Discussing what platform work is, and how it can be defined and classified
  • Describing how digital platforms affect social protection, job security and the work environment
  • Clarifying the need for adapted regulations and work environment strategies for the platform economy
