Notification of use of infectious agents

You must notify the use of infectious agents to the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
As an employer, you must notify the use of infectious agents to the Swedish Work Environment Authority. Notification must be made no later than 30 days before the start of the activity. If anything changes in the activity, you need to update your notification or make a new notification.
Activities that shall not be reported
It is not considered use of infectious agents if you come into contact with infectious agents in your activity, but do not intend to cultivate or in any other way increase the level of the infectious agents. In this case, you shall not report the activity.
Examples of activities that shall not be reported include:
- care of infected people or animals
- biochemical analyses of samples from humans or animals
- disposal of waste containing infectious agents
- cleaning up bird droppings
- sewerage work.
You shall not notify your activity if you use micro-organisms that are not human infectious agents, such as bacteria that can only cause disease in animals.
However, you must notify your activities if the micro-organisms you use are genetically modified, GMM.
Submit a notification of infectious agents in risk groups 2, 3 and 4
Before you, as an employer, start an activity where infectious agents in risk group 2, 3 or 4 will be used, you must notify the activity to the Swedish Work Environment Authority. You must also report significant changes in the activity. An example of a significant change is new premises or that you will be using infectious agents of a completely different type from before.

Choose a form depending on which risk group you want to notify. Don't forget to send the necessary attachments.
Risk group 2
Send your notification to
Write "Notification of use of infectious agents according to Chapter 11 Section 27 of AFS 2023:10 infectious risks" in the subject line.
Risk group 3
Send your notification to
Write "Notification of use of infectious agents according to Chapter 11 Section 27 of AFS 2023:10 infectious risks" in the subject line.
Risk group 4
Send your notification, in an inner envelope marked H-register, by registered secure mail to the Swedish Work Environment Authority, Box 9082, 171 09 Solna. Contact a case officer if you need more detailed instructions.
Significant changes in the activity
Send your notification to
Write "Notification of use of infectious agents according to Chapter 11 Section 27 of AFS 2023:10 infectious risks" in the subject line.
Why you must notify
The purpose of notifying the activity is for the Swedish Work Environment Authority to know which employers use infectious agents and where the work is to be carried out. We then have the opportunity to inspect the laboratory or large-scale facility in advance. We can also come and inspect the workplace when a major change has occurred.
This happens to your notification
When your notification reaches the Swedish Work Environment Authority, it is registered and your case is given a registration number. The registration number should be used in all written communication regarding the case.
If you would like to know something or would like to provide additional information, please provide the registration number for faster processing of your case.
