How does an inspection proceed?
Usually advance notice of the inspection visit is given by phone or letter, but the law also entitles the inspector to arrive unannounced. One or more inspectors may be present at the inspection, which is mostly a matter of verification. The actual procedure can vary, however depending on the industry concerned, the size of the organisation and other circumstances.
The safety delegate or an employee representative normally take part in the inspection. Immediately afterwards the inspector gives a verbal account of his or her impressions of the work environment and any deficiencies that have been observed. If the inspector has found deficiencies, these will later be described in writing, in an inspection notice.
