Vibrations, AFS 2005:15

These Provisions are addressed to employers in activities where the employees are or may come to be exposed to risks due to vibrations. The Provisions apply to both hand-arm vibration and whole-body vibrations.

These Provisions are addressed to employers in activities where the employees are or may come to be exposed to risks due to vibrations. The Provisions apply to both hand-arm vibration and whole-body vibrations.

To meet the requirements in the Provisions, the employer shall plan and conduct work in such a way that the employees’ vibration exposure is reduced to the lowest possible level.

It is the employer’s duty to inform all employees exposed to vibrations of the risks involved.

The employer must regularly assess the risks to which the employees are subjected through vibration exposure. Among other things, the risk assessment shall include an estimate of the employees’ vibration exposure.

If it emerges that vibration exposure exceeds the action values in the Provisions, the cause of this shall be ascertained. And if no measures are taken immediately, a timetabled action plan shall be drawn up and put into effect.

The employer shall offer medical surveillance to employees subjected to vibrations in excess of the action value, and also when the manner of their exposure gives cause to suspect that there may be a connection between the exposure and harmful effects on health, even if the action value has not been exceeded.

Vibration exposure may not exceed the limit value. If the limit value is exceeded, the employer shall take immediate measures to reduce the vibration exposure.

The Provisions make clear that, as part of the risk assessment, the employer shall also consider whether the exposure has a heavy impact content, whether the situation is affected by special working conditions, whether the employee belongs to a particularly vulnerable risk group, and so forth.

 Action value Limit value
Hand and arm vibrations 2.5 m/s 2 5.0 m/s 2
Whole-body vibrations0.5 m/s 21.1 m/s 2
